A Brief History of the Annual Can-Am Celebration The town of Hounsfield and the Village of Sackets Harbor were established in 1802. The Community has heard the sound of military bands and observed marching soldiers, The school has always been an integral part of our Community. The Sackets Harbor Volunteer Fire Co. has Always been available. Through out the years all our accomplishments and experiences have stemmed from our natural spirit. In early Spring of 1972 the All America Day Committee was formed. The Committee created a one day program with music, food, displays, and speeches to celebrate the 4th of July. Board minutes relate $325 in funding. This successful program continued in 1973 & 1974. It continued to grow and the volunteers grew in experience. In September, 1974 a newly formed 1976 Bicentennial Committee presented reports to Town & Village Boards which were well received. The Report contained many new programs. The 1976 Bicentennial Celebration was a tremendous success. The Can-Am Committee was formed and subsequently the Annual Can-Am Celebration came forth in 1977. From our historical past, and now from 1972 thru the present, volunteers have built Community Celebrations around family enjoyment with displays & demonstrations, great parades, enjoyable food, good music, carnival rides, and awesome fireworks. |
